Reduced form may thus iconically signal immediacy. But the length or complexity of a message may also correspond to the extent to which it conveys new or unfamiliar information. Reduced form may thus be an index of familiarity. Much of the arbitrariness of grammatical structure arises where equally plausible motivations like these are in effect competing for expression on the same linguistic dimension. Competing motivations, however, are not the same as no motivation. The large number of examples of both iconic and economic motivation in human language call into further question the familiar doctrine of the essentially arbitrary nature of grammatical categories and language structure.
