By detailing the close, loving family lost in the Holocaust, their memory lives on in the family he subsequently gained. From that traumatic beginning his life evolved as a successful business man and committed participant in communal affairs. After very brief school days he joined his father in his timber business and established a nation- wide Timber Importing Company which necessitated using all his entrepreneurial skills and much travelling world wide.

This brought him into contact with people of different cultures and nationalities. Community involvement is still a high priority and being committed to widely different projects and causes has further enhanced his life. With Alfons Silverman’s unprecedented recall of his very early years, Part 1 details his young upbringing in a hard working but comfortable Jewish family in pre-war Berlin, the effect of rising Nazism with its virulent anti-Semitism and the gradual disintegration and disappearance of his extended family.

A few, like him and his parents, escaped abroad. Part 1 continues with his early struggles to adapt to life in war-time England and the outcome of those family and friends who found havens elsewhere. The accompanying photographs, carefully treasured over the years, illustrate a lost world.Part 2 continues the story with his entry into the business world alongside his father. The business rapidly expanded and involved him in numerous projects. His happy marriage and rapidly expanding family have brought him the emotional stability which his disrupted childhood had caused him to lack.

His early determination to succeed, despite all the odds, isclearly reflected in his adventurous and fulfilling life. It is his hope that others, particularly the younger generation, will take away the message that, with similar determination and dedication, misfortunes can be overcome and life affirmed.
