Though its genre is favorably historical fiction, it tells the tales of romance, power, and glory. A chief part of the book is the characters- they stay with the book in all circumstances, and are honourable persons.

The setting is in Old England, but Scott tells it as though it is modern-day (despite the Old English drawl). This is a book of fantasies and is enjoyed by readers of a mature age.--Submitted by elainemaine. His first novels centred on his native Scotland, but Ivanhoe, written in 1819, is set in Yorkshire in northern England. The date is 1194, and it’s been over a hundred years since the Normans conquered England.

The original Saxons are now down-trodden and inferior subjects, but are not reconciled to their fate. Our hero, Ivanhoe, has returned from the Crusades to the home of his father, the Saxon Cedric, in disguise. His identity is discovered when he wins a knightly tournament and must take off his mask.Ivanhoe is in love with the Lady Rowena, but his father disapproves. He is injured and is put in the hands of a beautiful Jewess, Rebecca, who heals him and of course falls in love with him.

The action becomes very menacing, and involves the Templar Knights and other Normans versus the Saxons and Rebecca and her father. The fighting is resolved, but Rebecca is to be burned as a witch. The ‘wicked’ Templar, Brian de Bois-Guilbert, and Ivanhoe joust to decide Rebecca’s fate, with a surprising outcome.
